This holiday season, the Canadian government is proposing a two-month GST/HST tax break on groceries and holiday essentials. From December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025, GST and HST will be temporarily removed on a wide range of qualifying goods.
Qualifying goods
Below is a list of goods that would qualify for the proposed tax relief:
- Groceries & holiday essentials: Snacks, restaurant meals, non-alcoholic beverages, and seasonal treats.
- Children’s items: Clothing, footwear, diapers, car seats, and select toys.
- Books & newspapers: Printed books and traditional newspapers.
- Decorations: Christmas trees and similar items.
The qualifying goods extend beyond those mentioned above. A comprehensive list can be found on the Government of Canada website.
Total Savings
- A family spending $2,000 on qualifying items could save $100 in GST or up to $260 in HST over the two-month period.
How It Works
- Retailers will automatically remove GST/HST at checkout for eligible items.
- The tax break also applies to qualifying goods imported into Canada during the relief period.
This initiative is expected to provide Canadians with $1.6 billion in tax relief, offering meaningful savings when it matters most.
