Marc Weisman – Tax Lawyer at Torkin Manes LLP

Marc Weisman’s practice focuses on income tax and commodity tax law. He has extensive experience advising with respect to domestic and international tax planning. His tax experience encompasses mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, international inbound and outbound acquisitions and investments, as well as financings. Marc also practices in the area of personal tax, estate planning and trust taxation for entrepreneurs, individuals and families, and in the area of tax dispute resolution. Marc will discuss a case file which highlights the importance of ensuring that executed documents implementing tax plans reflect what really happened. He will also discuss the recent decision of the Federal Court of Appeal in the McDonald case vis-a-vis its application to pipeline tax planning to avoid double tax.

Nancy Yan received her MBA from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA) and Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP). Cadesky and Associates LLP is an independent tax specialist firm focused on Canadian, U.S. and international tax services. Nancy specializes in advising privately held businesses and their shareholders on corporate and personal tax planning, international business structuring, trust, estate and succession planning. Nancy has also assisted clients with tax audits and appeals on a wide variety of matters. Nancy is co-editor of Taxation of Real Estate in Canada (Carswell) and is a regular speaker at a number of professional seminars in Canada. She will provide a general tax update and discuss year-end tax planning and owner manager remuneration.

Frank Kisluk is a Chartered Accountant, Trustee in Bankruptcy, and a vice-president of msi Spergel inc., Trustee in Bankruptcy. Frank has been providing professional advice for 44 years, the last 35 as a Trustee. His practice focuses on financial restructuring for individuals, including self-employed professionals, through
structured formal Proposals to creditors under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. He has negotiated extensively with CRA as the principal creditor. Frank is the author of several books, the most recent being Taking Control of Your Financial Life. He is a frequent public speaker on insolvency-related topics, appearing on radio, television and in the print media. His presentation will share insights into negotiating with CRA as the major creditor.

Philip Gennis, Senior Executive V.P. of msi Spergel inc., is both a lawyer and a licensed Trustee-in-Bankruptcy with over 35 years of professional insolvency experience. He brings a broad base of experience to bear upon the crisis equation with an innate ability to develop workable solutions built on the broad support of all interested parties. He is trained to assess each unique financial situation and to provide solutions that are practical, responsive and accessible.
Topics: He will present a summary outline of the tools available to individuals, while solvent, to assist them in ordering their financial affairs in a manner beneficial to them. He will also provide some insight into the priority claims of certain government agencies and their impact upon business enterprises.
