On November 21, 2024, the Department of Finance announced that it will introduce new legislation to provide for a $250 Working Canadians Rebate. This tax-free rebate, which is aimed at helping Canadians with the rising cost of living, will be available to eligible Canadian workers in early spring 2025.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a Canadian resident who worked in 2023 and earned up to $150,000 in net income.
- Must have filed a 2023 personal tax return by December 31, 2024, and:
- Claimed a tax credit for Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) contributions on employment or self-employment earnings;
- Claimed a tax credit for Employment Insurance (EI) or Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) premiums; or reported income from EI/QPIP benefits.
- Must be a resident of Canada on March 31, 2025.
- Must not be incarcerated for at least 90 days before April 1, 2025, and must not be deceased on April 1, 2025.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will automatically deliver the rebate via direct deposit or cheque. The Department of Finance has not commented on whether an application is required to be filed at this time.
